My emphasis in landscape design is to apply ecological principles to residential landscapes.
This includes such concepts as
- Developing natural plant communities that fit within our regional vernacular,
- Creating more diverse ecosystems resulting in fewer problems,
- Working with succession to allow plants to mature to their ultimate size gracefully and not become pruning nightmares.
- Building good soil fertility rich in organic matter and at the right soil pH.
- Attracting favorable wildlife such as birds, butterflies and pollinator insects.
Such designs include woodland shade gardens, scree gardens, rain gardens and Piedmont meadows.
A naturally planned and developed landscape usually requires less work to maintain.
Consultations typically take two hours. We will spend that time together walking around your property assessing the soil, topography, pedestrian flow and zones of human activity, light exposure, views, etc. We will discuss the existing plants and how best to restore, repair, or replace them.
Piedmont Environmental’s consultations and landscape design work are billed at $50/ hour.
